How the TOEFL score calculator works
Enter four section bands from 1.0 to 6.0 in 0.5 increments. The calculator averages Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing, then rounds the mean to the nearest half band using the current ETS overall-score method. It also looks up the associated CEFR level and the published comparison range on the former 0–120 scale.
The target mode compares the estimated overall band with a goal you choose. The weakest-section note identifies the lowest input and links to relevant practice. If several sections share the lowest result, the tool lists all of them instead of pretending one is uniquely responsible for the overall score.
Understanding your calculated result
Read the result in layers. First check whether the overall band reaches your target. Then inspect the four section values for a required minimum or a large imbalance. Finally, use the CEFR label and old-scale range only as interpretation aids.
A single practice attempt is noisy. Equipment, topic familiarity, timing, and practice-material quality can all affect it. Track comparable attempts over time and keep the same test conditions when you want to measure progress.
TOEFL 1–6 and 0–120 comparison
The former total scale and current band scale have different levels of precision. One half band therefore maps to a range of old totals rather than one exact number. The calculator displays both the ETS comparison range and its midpoint, clearly labeled as comparison values.
Official reports through January 2028 already include a comparable overall 0–120 estimate. Use that official value for applications. The calculator is most useful before the test, when you are setting a target or interpreting practice section bands.

What score should you target?
Set a target from the official admissions page for your exact university, program, degree level, and intake. Record both the overall requirement and any section minimum. If the page lists only the former scale or is unclear about test dates, contact the admissions office rather than guessing.
A practical study target can include a small margin above the published minimum, especially if your practice results vary. That margin is a planning choice, not a guarantee of admission. Language scores are normally one part of a wider application decision.
